Google Assignments is available pre-installed within Stanford's Canvas platform. Use your SUNet email address and university Google account when using this tool in Canvas.

Google Assignments features

This integration enables instructors to create, distribute, and manage assignments directly from Canvas using Google Docs, Sheets, and other Google tools. Key features and functionalities include:

• File management: Instructors and students can embed Google Drive files using the Rich Content Editor, and instructors can add Drive files to Modules.
• Attach files from Drive: Students can attach Google Drive files directly in any Canvas Assignments that allow File Upload. Files are automatically converted for view in Canvas SpeedGrader.
• Create Google Assignments: Instructors can create a Google Assignment that links to Google files (this is different from a Canvas Assignment).
  • Attach a Google file as a template (e.g., a worksheet) that is distributed as individual copies for each student to fill in. Each student can edit and submit their own copy of the document through Canvas once completed.
  • Allows students to run an originality report on their work before turning it in to identify uncited content and unintentional plagiarism.
    • Importantly, instructors must provide “clear advance notice” to students before enabling this option.
    • This feature compares submitted work against Google Search and Google Books. It does not check for AI-generated content.
• Create Google Collaborations: Instructors and students can create shared Google files for the entire class or select members to work on together, allowing the instructor to monitor progress through Canvas.
• Grading and feedback: Instructors can provide feedback and grades on student submissions directly within the Google tool, making the process more efficient. They can leave comments, highlight text, and return the revised documents within the Canvas platform.
• Access permissions: The integration allows instructors to set permissions for student access to their documents, ensuring that students can only edit their own or their group's copy of the assignment.

Google Assignments is available pre-installed within Stanford's Canvas platform. Use your SUNet email address, which is automatically associated with your university Google account, when using this tool in Canvas.
