MATLAB

MATLAB is a language and a technical computing environment that provides core mathematics and advanced graphical tools for data analysis, visualization, and algorithm and application development.

MATLAB is a technical computing environment used to analyze and visualize data, develop algorithms, and create models and applications. Many different tools and products within the MATLAB environment are used extensively in engineering and in scientific and academic research.

Stanford users can access MATLAB tools from the Stanford University MATLAB portal.

MATLAB features

MATLAB can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Design and tune deep learning and machine learning algorithms
  • Application development, including building a graphical user interface
  • Develop embedded systems and control systems
  • Digital signal processing
  • Computational biology and computational finance

The MATLAB campus license includes:

  • MATLAB Onramp: A free, self-paced, two-hour online course from MathWorks, covering the basics of MATLAB
  • MATLAB Copilot: A generative AI tool that assists in creating, refining, and debugging MATLAB code
  • MATLAB Parallel Server: perform MATLAB and Simulink computations on clusters and clouds
  • MATLAB Grader: Auto-graded coding assignments integrated with Canvas
  • MATLAB Online: MATLAB in a web browser
  • MATLAB Drive: File sharing and collaboration tools
  • MATLAB Academy: a library of online training

Artificial intelligence features

MATLAB Copilot provides generative AI capabilities for the MATLAB desktop environment. It assists with MATLAB workflows and provides responses based on MATLAB-specific information. You can use MATLAB Copilot to learn techniques, develop ideas, and improve workflows.

With MATLAB Copilot, you can ask questions in the Copilot Chat and get responses based on relevant MathWorks documentation and code examples. As you type in the MATLAB Editor, autocompletions provide code predictions. Alternatively, describe the code you want, and MATLAB Copilot will create or modify code for you.

MATLAB Copilot helps with programming tasks by explaining code and error messages and adding comments. You can also automatically generate test cases to verify expected code behavior (with MATLAB Test).

Access MATLAB

  1. Go to the Stanford University MATLAB portal.
  2. Click Sign in to get started.
  3. Click Create an account. Use your @stanford.edu email address.
  4. Verify your account via email.
