Panopto
Panopto is a video content management system used to record, edit, manage, and share video content for teaching and learning.
Panopto is Stanford’s video content management system. Panopto’s versatility allows you to tailor it to the specific needs of your courses. Use it to support a flipped classroom model, track attendance through video completion statistics, enhance overall student engagement, and more. Panopto is only available through the Stanford Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).

- Record, upload, edit, and publish video lectures effortlessly.

Improved accessibility
- Embed video content directly into Canvas Modules, Assignments, or Pages.
- Increase accessibility with automatic speech recognition (ASR) captions and screen reader support. ASR captions may not meet ADA compliance standards. Artificial intelligence features
Access AI users can benefit from automatic features, including key point summaries, detailed summaries, and enhanced smart chapters, for easier navigation. This feature enhances the learning experience by allowing students to revisit key concepts at their own pace. The Access AI feature is turned off by default but can be activated by teaching teams. Please note that while we support some of these AI features in our Stanford-specific instance, not all AI-powered features available within Panopto are available to Stanford users.
Access Panopto
Panopto is only available through the Stanford Canvas platform. Look for Panopto Course Videos in the settings and navigation menus of your Canvas course. By default, all Zoom sessions recorded to the cloud and scheduled from the Canvas Zoom tool will be automatically imported into your Panopto Course Videos tool.
Panopto capture software is also available in some School of Engineering classrooms for automated recording and publishing. Use-cases for Panopto
In-video quizzes that connect to the Canvas gradebook
Teaching teams can use Panopto's in-video quizzing to enhance students' comprehension of the materials. Panopto offers a variety of question types designed to create engaging and customized assessments. Additionally, teaching teams have the flexibility to determine whether students may retake quizzes and review correct answers along with detailed explanations. These quiz results can then be tied to the Canvas Gradebook.
Track viewing analytics in the Canvas Gradebook
Panopto provides video viewing analytics that allow teaching teams to monitor student engagement through metrics such as total viewing time and completion percentage. The completion percentage can be tied to the Canvas Gradebook. This can be used for a variety of purposes. In some instances, this can be used to take attendance.

Student-created recordings and peer feedback
Panopto enables teaching teams to create assignment folders, providing students with access to its built-in recorder and editor. Students can upload their presentations or record and edit videos directly using Panopto Course Videos in Canvas. Students can view each other's presentations and offer timestamped feedback, fostering an environment of peer review and improvement.
Video repository for exemplary teaching for TAs
The Math Department has developed a dedicated Canvas course that showcases exemplary teaching practices within the classroom. This collection of recorded sessions serves as a valuable supplementary resource for teaching assistants-in-training participating in the Math Teaching Workshop course.
