Redirect Tool

Stanford provides access to the Rediret Tool through Canvas

The Redirect Tool is useful for integrating content from outside sources into a Canvas course. Overall, the Redirect Tool enhances the flexibility of course design in Canvas and allows for seamless integration of external materials. 

 Redirect Tool

With the Redirect Tool, instructors can: 

• Link to External Content: Easily link to websites, online documents, or other digital resources without leaving the Canvas environment.
• Create Custom Menus: Instructors can create custom navigation items that lead to external sites, helping to organize resources in a way that enhances the learning experience.
• Manage Navigation: Redirect links can be added to the course navigation menu, allowing students to access external resources easily.
• Adjust Link Settings: Instructors have control over how links are displayed, such as whether they open in a new window or the same tab.

Access the Redirect Tool in Canvas

Teaching teams can add an external URL directly to the course navigation menu within Canvas. 

• Go into your course and click on Settings from the lefthand navigation.
• Click Apps near the top of the page.
• Click the Redirect Tool or you can search for it by typing “Redirect Tool” in the search bar.
• Click +Add App.
• Fill in the fields for Name (as you want it to appear on your navigation bar), URL Redirect, and select the checkboxes that apply.
  • Make sure to select “Show in Course Navigation”
• Click Add App.

Reload the page and you will see a new link in the course navigation. If you'd like to change the order of your navigation tools, go to Settings > Navigation > drag and drop tools to your liking > scroll down and Save. 

Note: You can add links to any tool that has the Rich Content Editor, such as on Assignments, Pages, Announcements, etc.
